Topaz ReMask 4
Topaz ReMask is back and better than ever before! It now has a refined look and is, get this, even easier to use! Masking can be pretty tricky in Photoshop. I have beaten myself up many times with the refine edge tool. ReMask comes in and makes masking so simple. Get this,
1. You paint blue on tricky areas
2. You fill in the stuff you want to lose with red
3. Anything Green stays…
4. Mask complete.
I used this technique in the image below to separate the background and donkey from the photo so I could edit them individually. ReMask NAILED this one!
Now usually a process this easy would be littered with mistakes. However, 95% of the time I make masked images in ReMask within seconds. Check out the process for yourself!
Topaz ReMask is currently 50% off through July 31st! What a deal!

Superb Tutorial Blake.
I have recently downloaded the free version 4 upgrade.
I would never have thought of using remask in this way.
Remask is a great plugin but i am still getting to grips with it.
I photographed some corporate head shots recently against a grey background and tried to use remask to remove the subject and put them on a white background but i couldn’t get it to mask the fine hair detail.
I have watched some tutorials and applied the techniques but still couldn’t get it to work.
There is a slider that by default is set to 10. Maybe i didn’t get it set properly for my specific photo but i’ll keep trying as it works great for 99% of the job.
Thanks.
Darren
I have Re-mask 3 now for some time and when version 4 came out I downloaded it immediately. Watching your presentation on it this week gave me lots of new ideas on how to use it more efficiently. I have used it on three images of my own and the new program is amazing and so much easier. I do look forward to watching more of your presentations on version 4.
Thank you for all your good work showing us new ways to do things.

No problem! I love ReMask 4! So much more intuitive and quicker.
I liked Blake’s tutorial on Topaz ReMask 4 though I
found it a bit rapid. I would appreciate clarification on
the use of the other tools in refining my mask(s).
Hi
Nice tutorial
However I also have downloaded a trial copy of remask 4 but unfortunately I have a similar problem to Darren above, where I just can’t get a decent mask for hair ; to be honest I find it worse than remask 3 which was not too bad. Anyway I shall not be purchasing remask 4 because as far as I can see it doesn’t work as well as it should on diffiicult subjects like trees and hair and really not worth the $60 +

It does work pretty well on hair and trees. Those are tricky masks that may take a bit more time to cut out. The trick is to use the color selector and select colors you want to keep and brush away the others in close proximity. It is not always perfect the first quick run through on wispy hair. It takes some trial and error. However, I understand your frustration with it.
Will Remask 4 work with GIMP?
Not that I am aware of.
Hi Blake. When I click Control+Shift+A, Adaptive Wide Angle comes up, not Camera Raw. Is there another command to get me in to CR?
