LUT Profiles, the Secret Sauce for GREAT BW images!
In today’s lesson, I am going to show you how to hack Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw into thinking you are working on a Black and White Photo, but you are really working in Color for Black and White. Sounds pretty cool, huh?
This trick uses Lookup Table-based Profiles in ACR. Before you run and hide because that sounds awfully nerdy! It’s a lot easier than you think! I am going to show you how to make your own Lookup Table profiles that open up a lot more toning possibilities through your BW process in ACR and Lightroom.
With Lookup Table Profiles you get to alter the look of a RAW image WITHOUT sacrificing any of the sliders in the Raw program. That means you will start with a certain look and you can use the sliders to edit the image further.
Lookup Table Profiles have traditionally been used as “Camera Profiles” but when you change the way you think about them they can unlock some amazing results in ACR and Lightroom. I will show you exactly how to do this today!

I followed your video and saved the cube file but when I try to drag and drop it into PS, it says it can’t open it because it is the wrong kind of file
Blake: many thanks once again for your very incisive and helpful insights! You never cease to amaze me.
I’m trying to recreate your ACR trick. Looks like in v23 Adobe changed the panel for loading the cube file into Br. it is different from that shown in your video. It does not accept as many inputs and so far I have been unsuccessful in creating the profile.
Found it. Sorry Blake, looking in the wrong spot. But the panel is different.
