Have your Photoshop layers been acting strange since the June 2020 update to Photoshop CC? I was subject to the odd “Legacy Compositing Photoshop Bug” and I was about to go berserk as I knew I was doing nothing wrong.
As it turns out, I wasn’t doing anything wrong and you probably aren’t either. The new PS CC 2020 update has a bug for us older users and it can be easily fixed.
Do this before throwing your computer out a window:
- Go to Edit
- Go to Preferences
- Go to Performance
- UNCHECK Legacy Compositing
Now your layers should be back to the normal workflow you are used to.
I didn’t bump into the problem. But, thanks for always looking out for us Blake!
Not a problem on a Mac. Thanks for thinking about us PS2020 slaves.
Thanks Blake
Mine was already unchecked. So go figure
Thanks so much for the update.
We are talking about Creative Cloud not Classic right?
PS CC is only Creative Cloud, there is no Classic Ps
Thanks Blake for keeping us safe from PS meltdown! FYI, on latest PS under W10, the box was not checked.
Thanks so much, I thought it was my outdated video card on 7-year-old MAC. I was actually going to write to you to see if you knew anything. Once again, saved the day, thanks Blake!!
Interesting…mine was already unchecked on my PC and I do have the update.
Then leave it unchecked, you are all good.
Blake,
Great info and yes, I was getting 2-3 duplicates like a displaced 2nd, 3rd image while working. On my Imac, I found that there was not preference under edit. I found going to PS main preferences and then performance, I found the legacy spot and turned it off. Have not had a chance to use PS as of this note, so I’ll assume that corrects the situation, and again thanks for giving us the correction.
Hi Blake, haven’t been having those issues (my Legacy box already unchecked), but I have been having weird, spontaneous PS crashes lately. No idea why…I just hope some pixie dust will come along and resolve “whatever” someday!
Thanks a lot Blake. Layers and blend modes behaved crazy just the uncheck worked fine!
I was almost with the hammer to my screen. Wished I had seen this before.. It took me to a lot of googles.. Thanks!
I had this problem with the layers and it was hard to manage. Fixed it, then it happened again. And the blend mode issue was really hard to work around, finally just gave up and hoping for an update and fix.
Thanks for your suggestions
I have updated to Photoshop 2023.
I was experiencing very strange and frustrating behaviour with layers, particularly their visibility. I would turn off a layer and it didn’t turn off – the eyeball had disappeared – yet the layer was visible, and when I turned it on again, with the eyeball now showing, then the layer turned off etc……
I followed your first three points above, but there was no LEGACY COMPOSITING checkbox, but there was one for MULTITHREADED COMPOSITING and when I uncheked this it seems to have fixed the problem.
