It’s a word used commonly in Yorkshire, Northern England (where I come from) and Scotland.
It’s best use (though not needed in this case) is when you are introduced to a young child by a proud parent and you are not too sure which sex it is – so you can ask questions which are gender neutral – what’s the bairn’s name ? How old is the bairn ? etc. Can save a ton of embarassment for both parties.
That is awesome! I am going to bring that to the states!
