The Critiquer Gets Critiqued!
As you may know, I conduct critique sessions on f.64 Elite. I have been doing these sessions for over 7 years and in that time have critiqued just about 900-1000 images. But in that time, I have never had a critique session of my own. I am a firm believer that a good critique session makes all the difference in your growth as a photographer.
Please do not confuse that with posting images to social media. Flickr, Instagram, Facebook, etc., are not designed for good constructive feedback. Everyone there will love your work regardless and fail to tell you what you really need to hear! I am talking about a good session with someone knowledgeable who can give you honest feedback in the name of growth.
I recently asked Gavin Hardcastle, comedic genius and phenomenal landscape photographer, aka fototripper, to come on over to f.64 Academy and critique some of my portfolio images. To return the favor, I went over to his channel to teach him a thing or two about selections in Photoshop. The result of our efforts is two incredibly funny videos that teach at the same time.
Enjoy this little break from social media, the current travesties of television media, and relax while you learn about photography 🙂

“Retina Shredding” made me laugh out loud. These did remind me of the first time you critiqued an image of mine a couple of years ago Blake. You said that it reminded you not to shoot too wide, something you often did!. This is a great video and while Gavin is a slightly mad Englishman, underneath all that there is occasionally some sense.
Blake – The videos were hysterical and instructive. Great advice on the need for a good critique – neither gratuitous praise nor unconstructive criticism. I have been following you since you were on On1. I am not actively photographng anymore only reworking old photos but as an artist and techie I appreciate your approach and enjoy the presentations.
Are you aware of 2 fun apps – Chroma Game Match and Gradient Game? They are good for quick relaxing breaks – fairly easy if you have a good color eye, good trainig if not.
This was quite insightful and your friend is quite a (nice) character! Thanks!
Thanks so much for the laughs, Blake. You deserve a great deal of respect for putting yourself out there like that. I’ve been a big fan of yours for a long time and this just makes it even bigger!
(Also love seeing your friendship with Matt K.)
Looking forward to more!!
not just instructive, a great comedy too, kept me focused.
I loved it! Both videos made me laugh while learning. Both of you pulled this off with style, humor, and creativity. Thank you ?
Loved it. Thanks Lord Rudis and Lord whatshisname>
Thank you for great educational entertainment.
A great way to teach me – and others? constructive self-criticism.
I have learned a lot from this and from many others of your tutorials.
You guys are hilarious. I think it is supercool to have such connection in a super competitive world. Loved it and learnt something at the same time.
Thanks! We do help each other when and where we can.
