The Color Zone System
I have been working like crazy these last couple months to put together the next Zone System Training Package. I first discovered the possibility of editing color similar to tone in the Digital Zone System. The results are spectacular! There will be more to come in the next week!

I love what I am learning with the video’s and I am seriously considering purchasing the CZS (was very intimidated before). I have a question about the “new color wheel” I use LR more than ACR. In HSL there are 8 sliders, but the new color wheel has 12 variations of the colors. Wouldn’t it make sense to have 12 sliders versus the 8?
Also is CZR overkill or complimentary when using Topaz or OnOne plug ins?
Thanks for the time in educating me in this awesome hobby I have really started enjoying. I can’t wait to come back from my vacation and use everything in the hundreds of photo’s I will be taking.

There are 8 colors as those are the most prominent in most photographs. I put twelve in the CZS, three of those colors are White, Black and Grey, which many would argue are not “colors”, that is another can of worms. However, I added them because they can be used after all color mods have been completed to modify the overall tone, or add color to the tone.
It is not overkill with other workflows. You can think of it as a finishing touch. While many of those plug-ins will get a good base, they may not give you exactly what you want so you can make the adjustments more finite with the CZS.
So glad you are enjoying it! This was once just a “hobby” for me as well, I found that I enjoyed teaching more than taking the pictures though. Imparting my knowledge on others has been so rewarding, I have met so many friends long the way.

Hi Blake. Have finished all three videos on the color wheel and found them fascinating. Thanks!! I am a hobbyist when it comes to photography. I also love to watch tutorials on photography. I think I am pretty good at composition, so some have said, but I don’t feel I am very artistic. I’m sort of a “technical” photographer. I very much appreciated your sharing color theory. That’s the first time I’ve been exposed to that side of photography. How do you think the color zone would work for someone like me, who doesn’t feel particularly artistic? Thanks again for your videos and other tutorials you share. Tim
Thanks for the feedback! I really do appreciate it. All artists are, are really good experimenters! Experimenting will get you to where you need to be and you will come to be an “artist” in time. I think anyone who does anything with photos in Photoshop can benefit from it. That is my one sided opinion 🙂
Well Blake, you have certainly hit it out of the park with CZS. I thought DZS was pretty much the ultimate, but
now CZS just takes things to a new level. What great control one has with their color palette now.
