The new Sky Replacement Tool in Photoshop is pretty awesome and does a wonderful job with tricky sky replacements. But, Adobe added an even better tool into Photoshop 2021. Yes, even better than the Sky Replacement Tool!
Personally, I don’t find myself replacing skies as often as I would need the Sky Replacement Tool. I do, however, make a lot of selections in my photos, and having the ability to make a sky selection opens incredible doors for landscape post-production!
In today’s tutorial, I will show you how to separate the sky and the foreground of your photo with the click of a button! If you want the Actions that accompany this tutorial, click here.
Blake, as always many thanks for your great insights and for the actions!
Very clever all your tips are so useful
Fantastic! I didn’t even know about the Select Sky. Wow!
Fantastic! Thanks for the insight.
Thanks Blake. I have used the Sky Replacement tool a couple of times now but I actually had not noticed the Select Sky Tool. As usual, your content and teaching style are fantastic.
Thank you Blake for this informative – and as you say “actionable” video,
I had a similar reaction as you did – the Select Sky tool makes it very easy to quickly create masks to separate the foreground and sky, a workflow step that you have taught in the past. Thanks for the actions. Now if Adobe would only include this in ACR.
Blake…thanks. Really. Great thinking and teaching.
Thank you so much!
Blake, you are my hero!! The king of photoshop, you are.
Fabulous!! Thank you so much for this tutorial and the actions. Much appreciated.

Another great one, Blake.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge so generously.
Blake, you are the man! Thanks very much!
Great!
As always Blake, some truly inspiring insights and easy to follow tutorials.
Bang! That was clever. Thanks for that.
I really love how you go through step by step to explain the work! Thank you so much for helping those like myself!
I was just doing exactly what you say before I watched this video! Am I really beginning to think about a photo the way you think at last? Thanks for the actions to make it easier.
Cool! One of your best hidden PS finds. Thanks.
That’s Blake — always digging for the good stuff the marketing geniuses missed. 😉 Thanks for the tip and the Actions! Love my f.64 Elite membership!
Hi Blake, Thank you so much for another great tutorial and set of Actions. I was aware of the Sky Replacement feature in the new PS update, but not Select Sky. I can see using Select Sky and your Actions for many of my landscape photographs. It will be interesting to see if this impacts my use of the Color Zone System in ZSE6 by instead using Select Sky and Color Balance to a greater extent. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot … once again a great inspiration to speed up my workflow in Photoshop.
Excellent use for the sky selection. Thanks for the actions. Love it.
Blake … as always … you’re the man! … Thanks!
Thank you Blake- so easy when you show us – Brilliant use of the tool to simplify photo editing.
Blake I have changed my email address and now I have to click somewhere to continue to receive your tuts. I cannot find the red button. Please help because I must have your insightful tuts.
Wow! another very handy technique! Thanks for the actions! I’ll be going back to my images of the SW US and reworking them using this technique! Thanks!
Wonderful Blake!
I have been using and studying Photoshop since Photoshop 3, no not CS 3 . It is an ongoing process to keep learning how to do new things and keep up with the changes. I surely wish I had some of these new features when I was working at The National Geographic Society preparing Images for production in our various products. Although we could not alter the elements of a photographic, everything had to be true and accurate, those selection and advances in color , contrast and exposure control would have made my life easier.
Thanks for the informative tutorial and the actions.
You make it looks so simple, you are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much for the actions.
Great tutorial! Photoshop’s sky replacement tool is so amazing. However, I’ve found that the selection of sky images included is somewhat lacking so I developed my own original sets of some of the most beautiful skies images imaginable. You can check them out at ocudrone.com/skyart
